With the rising fuel costs and alarming levels of pollution, buyers are inclining towards alternate fuel to keep their transportation costs in check. Meanwhile, electric cars in this part of the world are slowly gaining momentum with awareness among masses and initiatives & subsidy from the Government of India to carmakers. The number of auto players trying their luck in the electric vehicle segment has increased in recent times, and the year 2020 promises to bring the largest flock of electric cars in India till date. In fact, the Indian Auto Expo 2020 will be all about electric cars. On a side note, this year world’s cheapest electric car – Ora R1 – will be launching in India. Tata Tigor EV

Based on the compact sedan Tata Tigor, the Tata Tigor EV is now available for sale to fleet owners as well as individual buyers. The zero-emission vehicle extracts power from 72V 3-phase AC induction motor which yields max power of 30 kW at 4500 rpm and max torque of 105Nm at 2500 rpm. On a full charge, it can go up to 213 km. The full battery recharge time is a concern though - takes 11 hours 30 minutes. Fast charging makes things easy and recharges 80 per cent battery in 2 hours. The top speed for the Tata electric sedan is 80 kmph. It is available in three variants – XE+, XM+ and XT+. The price starts from Rs 9.44 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for tour operators and Rs 12.59 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) for individual buyers.

Mahindra E20 Plus

The Mahindra E20 Plus is essentially a city car, good for short daily commutes. It comes with two battery options – 280 Ah and 210 Ah. The lithium ion batteries offer a range of 140 km and 110 km, respectively. Offered in three variants, the individual-buyable variants, P4 and P6, get the 210 Ah 3-phase motor generating max power of 19 kW at 3500 rpm and excellent torque of 70Nm at 1050 rpm. It gives a range of 110 km on full charge. The P2 variant of the Mahindra E20 Plus is restricted to fleet owners; it generates same power but gives higher range of 140 km courtesy a bigger battery. It gets features such as smartphone integration, touchscreen infotainment system, navigation and climate control system. Its price ranges from Rs 8.51 lakh – Rs 9.36 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Hyundai Kona EV

Hyundai introduced its all-electric Kona SUV in India in July 2019. It comes with a powerful 100kW motor which has the longest range of 452 km (ARAI tested) for an electric vehicle in the country. The motor generates 136PS of top power and 40.27kgm of torque. The battery takes 6 hours and 10 minutes for full charge; with 50kW fast charger it juices up 80 per cent battery in 57 minutes. It comes with four driving modes – Eco, Eco+, Comfort and Sport. The 5-seater SUV gets LED bi-functional headlamps, LED DRLs, roof spoiler, LED taillamps, roof rails, 17-inch alloys on the outside. Inside, it gets auto AC, sunroof, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, cruise control, rear AC vents and, of course, the 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility. It is offered in two variants – Kona Premium & Kona Premium Dual Tone. The Hyundai Kona EV is tagged in the price bracket of Rs 23.71 lakh – Rs 23.90 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

Mahindra eVerito

India’s first electric sedan, the Mahindra eVerito is the electric version of the Mahindra Verito, which has been discontinued now. Powered by a three-phase 72V motor, the electric sedan produces maximum power of 41PS and a peak torque of 91Nm. On full charge, it is claimed to travel 140 kilometre but the real world figures are far less. However, it takes 11 hours 30 minutes to get fully charged! The fast charging does juices up the battery up to 80 per cent in 1 hour 30 minutes. It is available in two variants – D2 and D6. Although aimed towards fleet operators, the Mahindra eVerito can be bought by private buyers too. However, the cost is different. The prices for fleet operators start at Rs 10.71 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi), whereas, individual buyers need to shell out Rs 2 lakh more – Rs 12.70 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi) – to drive the Mahindra eVerito.
