With the launch of the competent Korean EV nearing, a lot of hype has surrounded around its range and battery specs. In this piece, we try to clear the blur with comprehensive battery-related details.

Kia EV6 Battery Specifications Explained

Kia is all set to begin its journey of electric mobility in India with its flagship electric vehicle, the EV6. The all-new Kia EV6 will be launched in India on June 2 and will come as a halo product available in limited numbers. It is the first-ever product from Kia, which is based on Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) – a pure-electric architecture for EVs of the future.

In India, Kia EV6 will be available in a single GT trim level in two variants – RWD and AWD. The rear-wheel-drive (RWD) variant gets a single motor setup on the rear axle, which pumps out maximum power and torque outputs of 229bhp and 350Nm respectively. On the other hand, the more powerful all-wheel-drive (AWD) variant has a dual motor setup with one electric motor on each axle, with their combined power and torque outputs rated at 325bhp and 605Nm respectively.

Both these variants of the India-spec Kia EV6 will feature a 77.4 kWh battery pack as standard, the details of which are below:

A standard, high-tech 77.4 kWh battery

Globally, Kia offers the EV6 with two Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese battery pack choices – a 58 kWh and a 77.4 kWh. The Indian market, however, is going to get only the long-range 77.4 kWh battery pack in the GT trim level offered as standard. For this battery pack, Kia claims a maximum driving range of 528 km in the WLTP cycle, which should provide a real-world range somewhere around 400-425 km.

Unlike the lithium-ion batteries available in smaller and more compact mass-market electric vehicles, this 77.4 kWh Nickel-Cobalt-Manganese battery pack can support a rating up to 800V DC fast charging. Using a 350 kW fast charger that can supply 800V of electricity, this battery pack can get charged from 10-80 per cent in just 18 minutes. Kia also offers the option of a 50 kW fast charging, which can boost the same battery from 10 to 80 per cent in 73 minutes.

It is this fast charging option, which is more feasible and easier to find across India. Apart from these optional fast charging options, the Kia EV6 will be made available in India with an 11 kW charger onboard, which is compatible with level 2 charging and can charge the battery from 0 to 100 per cent in around seven hours.

What makes this battery pack even more special is its vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality, using which one can charge a range of appliances and gadgets such as laptops and can run heavy appliances like camping equipment and refrigerator using the battery pack of the Kia EV6.

In this functionality mode, electricity is taken from the 77.4 kWh battery pack of the EV6 and gets supplied to the charging control unit (CCU) present in the vehicle. This CCU offers 1900W of power output which is accessible through a 100V power outlet located at the front of the base of the second row of seats in the form of a socket.

If the battery pack is charged up to 100 per cent, one can continuously draw power through this 100V power outlet for at least 36 hours. Not only gadgets and appliances but this V2L functionality can also be used to charge another vehicle using the vehicle-to-vehicle mode at a slow charging rate of 1.1 kW.
